Types of Tracking Systems

  1. Radio frequency identification, or RFID

Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is the use of radio waves to read and capture information stored on a tag attached to an object.  A tag can be read from up to several feet away and does not need to be within the Radio-frequency identification (RFID). It uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects.

RFID is a technology similar in theory to bar codes. However, the RFID tag does not have to be scanned directly, nor does it require line-of-sight to a reader. The RFID tag it must be within the range of an RFID reader, which ranges from 3 to 300 feet, in order to be read. RFID technology allows several items to be quickly scanned and enables fast identification of a particular product, even when it is surrounded by several other items.

RFID tags have not replaced bar codes because of their cost and the need to individually identify every item.

  • Cell-Phone Triangulation

Cell phone triangulation or cell tower triangulation is similar to GPS tracking in many ways. Multiple towers are used to track the phone’s location by measuring the time delay that a signal takes to return back to the towers from the phone. This delay is then calculated into distance and gives a fairly accurate location of the phone.

A typical cell phone has enough power to reach a cell tower as far as 45 miles away. Depending on the technology of the cell phone network, distances can vary; along with other conditions such as equipment and terrain limitations.

  • Geofencing

A geo-fence is a virtual perimeter for a real-world geographic area. A geo-fence could be dynamically generated—as in a radius around a point location, or a geo-fence can be a predefined set of boundaries (such as school zones or neighborhood boundaries).

The use of a geo-fence is called geo-fencing, and one example of usage involves a location-aware device of location-based service (LBS) user entering or exiting a geo-fence. This activity could trigger an alert to the device’s user as well as messaging to the geo-fence operator. This info, which could contain the location of the device, could be sent to a mobile telephone or an email account.

  • Internet Tracking

Web tracking is the practice by which websites identify and collect information about users. This is generally in the form of some subset of web browsing history.

Whenever you use the Internet, you leave a record of the websites you visit, along with each and every thing you click. To track this information, many websites save a small piece of data, embed invisible objects, or use your user accounts and hardware configuration.

From the perspective of website owners and of trackers, it provides desirable functionality, including personalization, site analytics, and targeted advertising.

Without trackers, an e-commerce website will have to treat every user as a stranger and would be unable to present personalized content.

  • GPS and Satellite Tracking

Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwide radio-navigation system formed from the constellation of 24 satellites and their ground stations. The Global Positioning System is mainly funded and controlled by the U.S Department of Defense (DOD).

Global Positioning System tracking is a method of working out exactly where something is. A GPS tracking system, for example, may be placed in a vehicle, on a cell phone, or on special GPS devices, which can either be a fixed or portable unit.  GPS works by providing information on the exact location. It can also track the movement of a vehicle or person. So, for example, a GPS tracking system can be used by a company to monitor the route and progress of a delivery truck, and by parents to check on the location of their child, or even to monitor high-valued assets in transit.
