Substation automation refers to using data from Intelligent electronic devices (IED), control and automation capabilities within the substation, and control commands from remote users to control power-system devices. Combining with NI System to develop a rugged system to control and monitor the parameters in real time from a centralized location
The Challenge:
To develop a system which can provide overall visibility of the system and managing the power distribution grid and to improve the day to day grid operation and maintenance task. Which will help to reduce the breakdowns by implementing smart alerts, logging statistical data, historical data for evaluating the operational performnce for technical planning and resource planning.
The Solution:
To meet our customer requiremment we have developed a application using LabVIEW which can transmits and receives logic or data from events of controls, metering, measuring, safety and monitoring of process devices such as Electrical equipment, Instrumentation devices, telecommunication on industrial applications. Power system elements ranging from pole-mounted switches to entire power plants can be controlled remotely over long-distance communication links. Remote switching, telemetering of grids (showing voltage, current, power, direction, consumption in kWh, etc.), even automatic synchronization is used in some power systems. The system also includes historical trending, alarm and event handling, email notification, and more.
Our system provides real-time power grid monitoring and control. It displays the single-line diagram of the power distribution substations and its apparatus (transformers, isolators, switchgears, generators, ATS, battery chargers, and more) and gives the operator the ability to view the variable values in real time, on user-friendly and ergonomic human machine interface (HMI) screens, and on multiple displays.
The LabVIEW Electrical Power Toolkit is used create applications to measure, analyze, and record electrical power data. The LabVIEW Electrical Power Toolkit is a software add-on for LabVIEW that provides VIs which helped us to create custom single- or three-phase power monitoring, metering, or quality analysis applications.
Conclusion:
With NI Hardware & Software we have successfully developed a rugged substation SCADA system which can perform real-time analysis and control a local power grid from centralized location.
